Stocking Up and Shipping Out

Getting close. Wrapped up my final round of vaccinations this week. Between what I'd already gotten and the ones I needed to top off, I'm about as medically prepared as I can be. Also picked up the anti-malaria prescription, which I need to start taking before we even leave the country. Nothing quite like taking medication for a disease you don't have yet.

Gear and Supplies

Ordered a few pieces of cooling gear from Duluth Trading Company. Rwanda sits close to the equator and while the elevation keeps things from being oppressive, I'd rather have moisture-wicking fabric than not. We'll see how it holds up in practice.

Also picked up a needle and suture kit. Hoping I never need it. But if something happens in a rural area where medical care isn't immediately available, at least it's there. Compact enough to fit in the pack without taking up real estate. Firmly in the "better to have it and not need it" category.

Internet Access: Managing Expectations

Worth saying upfront: internet access in Rwanda is going to be limited. I'm not going to be able to hop on Wi-Fi whenever I want and post something. The plan is to write entries as I go, save them locally, and upload when I find a connection. Posts might come in batches rather than daily. If things go quiet for a stretch, it's not because I've stopped writing. It's because I haven't found a signal yet.

More before departure. Almost there.
