Canonical product spec. For SOP artifact set see _MANIFEST.md. For the running decision log see DECISIONS.md.
Product family: WanderBreath (premium-shelf standalone whole-home air-quality monitor) Tiers: 2 — Standard (WV-BRT-STD) and Pro (WV-BRT-PRO) Category: WV-BRT (breath / air-quality monitor — monitor only, NOT a purifier) Primary protocol: Matter 1.3+ over WiFi (all tiers); BLE 5.0 commissioning Date: 2026-04-24 Revision: v1.0-candidate
---
1. Family premise
What it is: the dedicated, premium-shelf, single-product whole-home air-quality monitor — the "good camera" of the air-quality category. One unit per home, central living area, beautiful enough to display on a bookshelf or mantle, accurate enough to drive WanderAir purifiers when readings cross thresholds.
Why it exists: Awair Element + IQAir AirVisual Pro + Airthings View Plus are the closest competitors. None offer:
- Privacy-first architecture (zero-cloud default; user-chosen backup)
- Identity-aware alert defaults (asthma / pediatric / pregnant / wildfire / survivor)
- 7-year parts + firmware + repairability commitment
- Standard-frame open-STL chassis
- Ambassador-assembled supported-employment manufacturing
- 60/30/10 Community Pool revenue model
- Native Matter-over-WiFi at every price point (not "premium feature")
- Cross-product trigger logic to a sibling purifier line (WanderAir)
- Anonymized cloud export (when cloud is opted into, the data is identity-stripped)
WanderBreath fills every one of those gaps at parity-or-better pricing.
Distinguish from siblings:
- WanderSense — multi-purpose room/door/desk presence + comfort sensor *fleet* (PIR + radar + T/RH + lux). Many units per home. Tile pricing.
- WanderAir — active HEPA + carbon air *purifier* (Desktop / Room / HVAC monitor tiers). Moves air. AHAM CADR + UL 867 certified.
- WanderBreath — single premium *monitor only*. Does not move air. Does not detect presence. Does not pretend to be a fleet product. One per home.
Who it serves (audience-explicit, per Standard 3):
- Privacy-first households who want IAQ truth without an Awair account or Airthings cloud login
- Asthma + COPD + reactive-airway households (tighter PM2.5 + VOC alert thresholds)
- Pregnant + HRT + post-op households (HCHO + VOC + RH guidance — Pro tier especially)
- Households in wildfire-prone regions (geofence-aware pre-alerts at 12 µg/m³ WHO threshold)
- New-construction + new-furniture households (HCHO off-gassing; Pro tier)
- Households with radon-prone basements (Pro tier; passive radon sensor)
- HAVEN safehouses + trans clinics + DV shelters (bulk Mission Partner deployment)
- Apple Home / Google Home / Home Assistant power users who want a Matter-native premium IAQ source-of-truth
- Anyone whose previous IAQ monitor became a paywalled-feature subscription

2. Family architecture — 2 SKUs
2.1 WanderBreath Standard (`WV-BRT-STD`) — $169 retail
Form factor: slim cylinder, 100 mm diameter × 130 mm tall. Matte cream anodized aluminum. Perforated mesh top (passive air intake). Saffron pinstripe upper bezel. Vertical 1.5-inch monochrome OLED on front. Single tactile button. Flat non-slip rubber base.
- MCU: ESP32-S3-WROOM-1-N16R8 (16 MB flash + 8 MB PSRAM)
- PMIC: TI TPS65086100 (multi-rail PMIC; shared with WanderAir + WanderSense flagship boards)
- PM / VOC / NOx / T / RH: Sensirion SEN55 (single integrated module; flagship-grade)
- CO2: Sensirion SCD41 photoacoustic NDIR (true CO2, not eCO2 estimate)
- Pressure + secondary VOC class: Bosch BME688 (DSP-enhanced VOC index + barometric)
- Display: vertical 1.5-inch monochrome OLED (Sino Wealth SH1107 or SSD1309 controller; 96 × 192 pixels)
- Status indicator: saffron-tinted dot LED (Cree CLM3C-AKA — single LED, not RGB strip; integrated into bezel)
- Connectivity: WiFi 4 + BLE 5.0 (ESP32-S3 native); Matter 1.3+ over WiFi
- Power: USB-C 5V/1A wall wart (no battery — premium-shelf product is wall-powered by design)
- Input: single tactile button (mode cycle + alert acknowledge + 10-sec hold = factory reset)
- Chassis: matte cream anodized aluminum cylinder (5052 alloy, anodized type II) + PETG OLED bezel + EPDM base seal
2.2 WanderBreath Pro (`WV-BRT-PRO`) — $269 retail
All Standard features plus:
- Formaldehyde HCHO: Sensirion SFA30 (sub-ppb HCHO; new-construction + binder off-gassing + pregnant-household relevance)
- Radon: passive radon module — RD200M USB-serial OR FTLab pulsed-ionization-chamber OR Airthings Wave-style alpha-track (decision pending Stage 4 sourcing; module is socketed for vendor flexibility)
- Display upgrade: larger 1.8-inch monochrome OLED (vertical, same controller family); higher pixel count for radon trend display
- Chassis upgrade: 150 mm tall (vs 130 mm Std) to accommodate radon sensor + larger OLED + thicker base for alpha-track stability
- Saffron pinstripe upper bezel (deeper saturation vs Std subtle pinstripe; Pro is the visible-shelf statement piece)

3. Dual-mode + tri-mode principle enforcement
Per _STANDALONE-AND-PLATFORM-INTEGRATION.md. WanderBreath supports all three modes simultaneously per [rule: dual-mode].
Mode 1 — Standalone (zero other WanderVerse purchases, no internet)
- Display + button only. Power on, see the air. No phone required.
- OLED shows: PM2.5 (µg/m³) · CO2 (ppm) · VOC index (Std) · HCHO ppb (Pro) · Radon Bq/m³ (Pro) · saffron status dot
- Status dot: healthy (saffron solid) / moderate (saffron pulse) / unhealthy (saffron blink) / hazardous (saffron rapid blink + button-acknowledge)
- No account required. No cloud. No telemetry. The unit is a premium thermometer for air.
- Button: short-press cycles metrics on display; long-press (3 sec) toggles night-mode (display dims); 10-sec hold = factory reset
- 6-month ring buffer on 16 MB flash; user can plug into a computer over USB-C and read CSV directly (Standard 4 transparency)
Mode 2 — Industry-integrated (Matter + HomeKit + Google + Alexa + HA + Apple Health)
- Matter 1.3+ over WiFi — native
AirQualitySensor + Pm25ConcentrationMeasurement + CarbonDioxideConcentrationMeasurement + TotalVolatileOrganicCompoundsConcentrationMeasurement + FormaldehydeConcentrationMeasurement (Pro) + RadonConcentrationMeasurement (Pro, custom cluster pending Matter 1.4 standardization)
- Apple HomeKit Accessory Protocol (post-MFi cert) — natively appears as Air Quality Sensor + temp + RH
- Google Home + Nest — Matter
- Amazon Alexa — Matter
- Home Assistant — first-class via ESPHome upstream
wanderbreath component + MQTT + mDNS auto-discovery
- Apple Health air-quality contributor — opt-in one-way export of PM2.5 + AQI to HealthKit
Air Quality category (iOS 18+); contributes to user's Air Quality timeline
- Google Health Connect — opt-in
air quality types (Android 14+)
- Setup time: <2 min via Matter QR on the unit
Mode 3 — WanderVerse-native (with WanderNode Hub + WanderAir purifier)
- WanderBreath as IAQ source of truth: when paired with WanderAir purifier(s), WanderBreath is the trigger source
- CO2 > 1000 ppm: WanderBreath alerts WanderNode Hub; Hub commands WanderAir Room to increase fan; if smart-window-lock present, Hub prompts to open window
- PM2.5 > 35 µg/m³: WanderBreath triggers WanderAir Room/Desktop to max fan; Hub closes smart window blinds (if integrated); HVAC switches to recirculate
- HCHO spike (Pro): WanderBreath alerts user about new-furniture off-gassing; Hub emphasizes WanderAir carbon stage
- Radon ≥ 4 pCi/L (Pro, EPA action threshold): WanderBreath escalates to user with mitigation guidance (open windows + sealed-basement venting + radon mitigation contractor referral)
- WanderBand respiration fused with WanderBreath PM2.5: asthma-coaching ("PM2.5 is high, your respiration rate is up — consider a mask, leave the zone")
- Identity-aware defaults propagate from user's WanderOS profile (trans-in-hostile-state → no Apple Health prompts; HAVEN-deployed → bulk-config thresholds)

5. Identity-aware-by-omission — enforcement
This section is non-negotiable per Platform Standard 3.
Never-present capabilities in any WanderBreath SKU:
- Cameras (zero — RGB or IR)
- Microphones
- Presence sensors (no PIR, no radar, no mmWave, no ToF — that is WanderSense's job, not WanderBreath's)
- Gait analysis
- Biometric ID of any kind
- Cellular trackable IMEI
- Bluetooth advertising that identifies the household
Data that leaves the unit:
- Air-quality readings (PM2.5, CO2, VOC index, NOx index, T, RH, pressure, HCHO Pro, radon Pro)
- Device self-diagnostics (firmware version, sensor health, signal strength)
- Anonymized when optional cloud sync is enabled — no household ID, no IP geolocation beyond city-level if user opts in to community pollution maps
Data that NEVER leaves the unit:
- Anything that could identify the household
- Raw sensor waveforms (processed on-device; only derived metrics emitted)
- Patterns inferable as occupancy (CO2 patterns can in theory leak occupancy — WanderBreath therefore quantizes CO2 at 30-second cadence to coarsest-acceptable resolution and rate-limits cloud export to hourly aggregates by default)
Anonymized cloud export — the canonical guarantee:
"If you opt into cloud backup, your data goes to your storage of choice (iCloud / Google Drive / Dropbox / Nextcloud / self-hosted S3). When community pollution-mapping is enabled (also opt-in), only city-level aggregated readings leave the device. The household ID is never linked to a reading."
Policy: if a future firmware release introduces any feature that could theoretically identify a person or infer occupancy from air-quality data (e.g., "learn the household's CO2 fingerprint"), that feature must be opt-in, off-by-default, reversible, and accompanied by a Platform Standard 3 review.

6. Pricing + margin (detail in `BOM-platform.csv`)
Target FOB costs + retail (1k-unit volume)
| SKU | FOB landed | Assembly (Ambassador) | Full FOB | Founding | Standard | Nonprofit |
|---|
| WanderBreath Std | $51.20 | $3.00 (15 min) | $54.20 | $149 | $169 | $109 |
| WanderBreath Pro | $91.40 | $4.50 (20 min) | $95.90 | $239 | $269 | $179 |
Margins at Standard retail: Std 68%, Pro 64%. Both healthy — premium-shelf positioning + low NRE + standard-module BOM delivers strong unit economics.
60/30/10 enforcement: gross margin allocates per Community Pool spec. Example Std: $169 retail → $114.80 gross → 60% Ambassador wages portion ($1.80 per unit hourly direct + benefits/training overhead amortized) + 10% PrideFund ($0.30 per unit) + 30% Community Pool ($34.44 per unit). See BOM-platform.csv for full breakdown including labor-attributable share.

7. Configurability / modularity (see `CONFIGURATOR.md` full matrix)
Per-order axes:
- Tier (Std vs Pro)
- Pinstripe color: saffron default; community-printed CC-BY-SA variants for advanced order
- Mounting: shelf default; optional wall mount bracket (additive)
- Ambassador signature: standard card / Lux glyph (Pro+) / Lux Artisan brass (Pro)
- Custom engraving (Pro): name or quote on base ring
- Extended warranty: 1-year base / 3-year extended
- WanderAssist subscription: optional $9/mo (free lifetime for Founding Members)
- HAVEN bulk preset: opt-in for Mission Partners
Upgrade paths:
- Std → Pro: send-back board + chassis swap (uneconomical — trade-in for credit recommended)
- Std + Pro: SCD41 5-yr recalibration is send-back service ($25 + shipping + Sensirion factory cal)
- Pro: SFA30 yearly recalibration is send-back service ($25 + factory HCHO chamber)
- Pro: radon module is socketed → user can swap radon vendor module if they prefer Airthings-cloud-bridged vs FTLab passive vs RD200M USB
---
8. Assembly + service
- All units Ambassador-assembled per WanderVerse Standard 1
- Ambassador signature card in every unit (QR to Ambassador's page)
- Lux glyph etched aluminum (Pro) option — $49 add-on at order
- Lux Artisan brass glyph (Pro) option — $129 hand-etched
- 7-year parts for structural components (chassis, PCB, MCU, sensors, OLED, button, base)

10. Why this family wins
1. Premium-shelf statement piece — beautiful enough to display, accurate enough to drive automations 2. Privacy-first by architecture — zero-cloud default; anonymized export when cloud is opted in; Awair / Airthings cannot match this 3. Identity-aware defaults — wildfire / pregnant / asthma / survivor / HAVEN modes; no competitor has any 4. Native Matter-over-WiFi at every tier — not a premium upsell 5. Pro is the only mid-shelf monitor with HCHO + radon + CO2 + PM bundled — beats Airthings View Plus on price + privacy + repairability 6. 7-year parts + firmware + open STL + published schematics — repair culture at premium-shelf scale 7. Ambassador-assembled + 60/30/10 Community Pool — every unit funds the mission 8. Cross-product trigger logic — WanderBreath drives WanderAir purifier action automatically (Mode 3); the most-frequently-cited Awair complaint (it just shows numbers) is solved by design 9. No vendor lock — anonymized cloud export to user's storage of choice; standard-module BOM 10. One per home — does not pretend to be a fleet product (that is WanderSense's job); does not pretend to be a purifier (that is WanderAir's job)
