Spotify pays artists $0.00318 per stream — 314,000 streams earns $1,000. Discovery Mode, Spotify's 'discoverability' program, requires artists to take a royalty cut in exchange for algorithmic promotion; a class action was filed in November 2025 documenting this as payola. Bandcamp was acquired by Songtradr in September 2023 and the editorial team and social features were immediately gutted — the platform artists built their careers on stopped being that platform. Resonate, the listener-owned cooperative streaming platform, dissolved due to governance friction and unsustainable economics. Tidal is now a Jay-Z subsidiary with no structural difference from major-label streaming. There is no ethical streaming platform for independent artists. WanderStream pays 50%+ of subscription revenue directly to artists — no label required, no stream minimums before payout, no Discovery Mode equivalent, no payola. CDN costs are zero via Backblaze B2 + Cloudflare egress partnership. MLC (Mechanical Licensing Collective) compliance is built in — artists get digital mechanicals without a publisher. Artist analytics are owned by the artist, not aggregated into label dashboards.
