Telegram's default chats are NOT end-to-end encrypted — server-side encryption means Telegram can read your messages and has cooperated with law enforcement requests. Only Telegram's 'Secret Chats' are end-to-end encrypted, and group chats are not available in Secret Chat mode. WhatsApp's metadata (who you communicate with, when, how often) is owned by Meta and is discoverable. Google and Apple iMessage backup (iCloud or Google Drive) breaks end-to-end encryption — most people have backup enabled. Geofence warrants against Google have been used in 17 documented abortion-related investigations. For activist, DV survivor, sex worker, immigrant, and whistleblower threat models, the difference between Signal, Briar, Session, SimpleX, and WanderHaven LoRa mesh matters operationally — one size does not fit all.
